7 Tips on How to Prepare for Your Cherry Blossom Photo Session

Updated: Mar 14, 2023

Did you know that New Jersey has more cherry trees than Washington, D.C.? Cherry Blossoms are truly the most beautiful gift from nature and we are lucky to have a few places to enjoy them in New Jersey.

Top places for a cherry blossom photoshoot in New Jersey are the Branch Brook Park in Newark which has more than 4,000 cherry blossom trees and Holmdel park. The trees bloom in April and unfortunately, they only bloom for about 14 days.

Now on to the actual tips to ensure you have a stress free and perfect cherry blossom session.

TIP #1 KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THE PEAK BLOOM DATES!

It's common for the predicted bloom dates to move around. In the past, peak bloom has occurred as early as March 15 and as late as April 18. If you are working with us for your cherry blossom photoshoot, we'll make sure to scout the location and check the blooming times to ensure you get the most perfect shots!

TIP #2 BEST TIME IS SUNRISE OR SUNSET!

Sunset or the golden hour is the most popular and for a good reason. You get the most beautiful soft light. Sunrise is of course the best time - as you are almost guaranteed to be there alone! So if you are up to it, getting up early is absolutely worth it!

TIP #3 WHAT TO WEAR

Invest into your outfits! I can't stress this enough. Play into the colors of the season. Color coordinate but don't match! Choose a color theme and then slightly deviate from it with accessories to keep things interesting. If you are working with us, we'll help you with this step during our consultation. We'll even go shopping with you, if you'd like! We also have a client closet you can use. Here are a few options for your perfect spring cherry blossom session.

  • Whites & Pinks look great and create an airy look.

  • Blues stand out great in the cherry blossoms and are a perfect color for men!

  • Flowy dresses look soft and amazing and compliment the blossoms.

  • Neutrals and pastels – light colors – are always a safe bet.

  • Do NOT have everyone in dark colors.

  • Avoid too many patterns and say no to characters.

  • Balance dark colors with light and airy pieces.

  • Keep it simple.

Look at your home décor. This may sound odd but it's quite important. If you plan to hang these photos in your home, which you should, then you will want to make sure the colors of your outfits go with the color scheme and style of your home.

TIP #4 ACCESSORIES

Say yes to accessories and wear them! Choose jewelry, covers and scarves that play into the theme. Add textures to make your images more interesting. Bring a crown for the girls! This is a must-have accessory for the ladies. Who doesn't like being a princess?! We have a bunch of accessories at the studio. Come check them out!

TIP #5 WEAR LAYERS

Dress appropriate for the weather. Wear layers. Spring is tricky and the temperatures can change quickly where you'll go from frigid to over heated in a matter of minutes. You don't want to end up either too cold or too warm so we suggest wearing layers. Use cardigans, covers, scarfs, etc. That way each family member can peel off, or add, a layer as they see fit and remain comfortable throughout the session.

TIP #6 FOOTWEAR DOs & DON'Ts

Footwear is important! Especially in the spring, in a park and unpredictable weather. The ground may be soggy. Kids are masters of finding dirt the second we get to the location! So flip-flops or heels are probably not the best choice for these sessions. Instead, wear something comfortable and spring appropriate, like flats or boots! If wearing sandals or lighter colored shoes, bring wipes so if you or your child does get into dirt, you can easily clean them off!

TIP #7 MANAGE YOUR EXPECTATIONS

It's important to manage your expectations, especially if children are involved! Cherry blossom sessions are hard. You'll need lots of patience and flexibility with the weather. There are a lot of moving pieces. Weather, blooming time, wind, crowds...children. :) Accept that kids have limits and the session may not run as smoothly as you might hope. Wear layers, bring water and snacks, wet wipes to clean their faces, a hair brush and maybe even a change of shoes and clothing!

Gorgeous time to do a Maternity session too!
